About Colin Decio

Colin Decio

Colin Decio was born in Birmingham, UK. His father was Ukrainian – hence the surname! At the age of twenty-three, Colin began serious study towards becoming a concert pianist after gaining a place at the Birmingham Conservatoire. In 1986 he was awarded the Burke Trophy for Advanced Piano, and was winner of the Birmingham Midland Institute Composition Prize, the John Ireland Chamber Music Prize and the Ludlow Philharmonic Concerto Competition (piano section) with Rachmaninov’s 2nd Piano Concerto, which he then performed several times with orchestra. Colin graduated in the same year with diplomas in Piano Performing, Piano Teaching, and Composition (with distinction).

In 1998 Colin attained a PGCE in Secondary Music Teaching from the University of East Anglia.

Colin has over thirty years’ experience of teaching piano to students of all ages, and he has been a peripatetic teacher in various UK secondary schools.

As a solo pianist Colin performs recitals which often include his own compositions. As an accompanist he works frequently with both singers and instrumentalists. In 2012 he toured UK with Souvenir D’Anne Frank, a theatre work based around his own composition for piano trio entitled ‘Het Achterhuis’ (The Secret Annexe).

In contrast to performing as a classical pianist, Colin works as a professional keyboard player using various synthesizers; performing in pop bands, showbands, big bands (with members of the Syd Lawrence Orchestra), rock bands (most notably Big Sur), and a progressive rock band called The E-Thing. He also works as a studio session musician. Colin was a music director in several UK holiday parks, and on board cruise ships based out of Singapore and Athens.

Colin arrived in New Zealand in 2016 and has permanent residency here. He lives with his wife, medieval singer and singing teacher Ingrid Prosser, in Eastbourne, Wellington.
