WELLSO SUMMER 2021
Following on from the success of three Summer Orchestral and Chamber programmes in January, and three years of Winter WELLSO Weekends, Rata Studios School of Music will be hosting 4 days of chamber and orchestral music from in January 2021
Based on the principles of WELLSO (Wellington Late Starters Orchestra) players of all levels are welcome to the programme. The Chamber groups/sectionals will be organised according to experience and level of playing but the Orchestra will be for all the players and parts will be arranged accordingly so we can all enjoy playing together.
The course covers a variety of styles of music and this summer we will have the additional focus and workshops on:
- Dynamics and timings
- Playing in a section
- Care and history of our instruments
“Well prepared, well organised, social, supportive and fun. Don’t just think about it – GO!” Lynne, Violinist, WELLSO Summer school 2017
We have coaching from top NZ professionals and previous coaches have included:
- Doug Beilman (NZ String Quartet for 20 years)
- Brenton Veitch (Principal Cello Orchestra Wellington)
- Belinda Veitch (Viola, NZSO)
- Mark Cookson (Principal Clarinet, Orchestra Wellington)
- Bruce Roberts (Former Principal Trumpet, Auckland Philharmonic, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra)
- Lawrence Reece- Principal Timpanist, NZSO
- Ursula Evan, Violin, NZSO
- Lachlan Radford, Double Bass, NZSO, Auckland Philharmonic, Orchestra Wellington.
“The lunches were amazing – professionally catered and bulging with veges. I was happily surprised” Claire, Violinist, WELLSO summer school 2017
A range of workshops on playing skills have previously included;
- Improving the quality of your tone while playing
- Looking after your body as a player
- Ideas of how to practice
- Coping with performance anxiety
The programme will be hosted by Rata Studios at Scots College in Wellington where there are excellent facilities and practice rooms. The cost will include all group tuition and sheet music, an early evening meal together on the first day, lunches plus morning and afternoon tea and coffee during the weekend. Individual lessons will be available with the tutors during the programme and a rota will be arranged nearer the time for those interested.
If you are flying from outside of Wellington and are concerned about daily travel, we were able to arrange local players on the programme to give lifts every day in the summer and this worked very well. There is excellent and convenient accommodation at Victoria University as well as Wellington’s Hotels.
“From participating in the WELLSO Summer programme my playing went to the next level…I had a one-on-one with one of the most respected Trombone players in NZ”. Pete from Hamilton WELLSO Summer School 2017
