Immerse yourself into the world of filmmaking. Devise, write, shoot and edit within a deadline. 

Be prepared to compete in filmmaking events such as 48Hours no matter your level of experience.  Learn the skills to collaborate quickly with others and take on the challenge of finishing a film when restrictions such as location, specific characters, prop or line of dialogue and most importantly time are money become immovable barriers.

In teams you will write, act, shoot, and edit. Collaboration is key to success.

Part One – From an Idea to Ready to Shoot

The first 8-weeks aims to deliver an injection of creative energy, a chance to experiment, have fun, engage with others and be creative. We will work both on story development, acting for screen, technical onset work with camera, and lighting and sound. You will form a tight knit production crew, rotating roles to learn how to shoot, direct and act in a short film your group has devised.

  • Scriptwriting

  • Structuring an idea.
  • Watching films as a screenwriter – critique and discussion
  • Creating an emotional journey for the characters and the audience.
  • Genre.
  • Location and Storyboarding
  • Shot plan
  • Rehearsal and direction of actors
  • Exploration of the actor/director relationship 
  • Camera operating with professional cameras
  • Lighting and Sound Recording
  • Onset jargon and ethics.
  • Q & A with directors and filmmakers
Part Two – SHOOT & EDIT – From ACTION to finished short film

Taking your learning from all the technical elements , you will shoot your short film then take your raw footage and craft it into the finished product.  Each individual student will be editing their group’s creation to take home at the end of the course. Each student will learn the skills needed to finish a short film.

Content 

  • On set shooting experience with guidance. 
  • Data Wrangling
  • Offline editing: creating the story and deciding what goes into the final cut, the mood, pace and story are well structured
  • VFX: adding visual special effects (CGI)
  • Colour grading: ensuring shots match and suit the tone of your film
  • Sound design: writing, recording, and editing the musical score; adding sound effects, ADR (additional dialogue recording), foley and music
  • Graphics: titles and credits. 
  • Editing footage with professional software

You can sign up to one part but highly recommended to do both parts to see your project through. The second part will begin in Term 2.
