Performance Capture Course
Our annual Performance Capture in collaboration with the Miramar Creative Centre is an immersive programme designed for actors, directors, and those aspiring DOP’s, wanting to upskill their craft and prepare themselves for working in the digital field of performance for film.
For ages 14–adults.
Performance capture is ingrained in the film industry, so it is crucial to understand and receive training in this technology and performance style.
This course offers a chance to learn the techniques of working in a virtual environment and the technology that will bring your characters to life. Actors will gain valuable experience learning specialised physicality and artistic techniques required for mocap performance. Furthermore, directors wanting to gain skills in performance capture directing, how to draw out the best performance from the actors, and DOP’s wanting to work with the technical attributes of this medium, this course is for you.

UNIT 1: Embodying your performance with Jo Rogers
20–22 January, 9-3pm
Studio based: Actors will focus on the creative aspects of their work such as the creating of characters, imagining environments and ultimately their physical acting performance skills. Acting requires a curiosity to dive into a world that is completely imaginary. You will be preparing scenes, focusing on rhythm, scale, timing, movement, expression, and imagination. We will draw on Stanislavski and use improvisation as a crucial tool to develop authentic, in-the-moment performances. We will actively rehearse blended scripted text with improvisational exploration of characters’ circumstances and actions.
UNIT 2: Performance Capture with Jo Rogers, Allan Henry & the Miramar Creative centre
23–25 January, 9-5pm
Studio and MOCAP space: Actors will have a hands-on experience using cutting-edge motion capture technologies. The first two days will be at Rātā Studios, where you will work alongside Allan Henry and Joanne Rogers. An actor requires a considerably larger imagination in PCap than on a live action set or stage. The actor is challenged to create an inner life for a given character and develop an understanding of how the performance calibrates to an avatar.
In teams you will storyboard, rehearse and prepare for filming in the Performance Capture Volume at the Miramar Creative Centre. You’ll learn essential techniques used for acting in Film, video games and TV. Focusing on the specificity regarding the technical requirements of the movements to be captured. Each student will suit up in cutting-edge optical motion capture gear, develop a digital character, and see it brought to life real-time inside virtual worlds.
