Music for Film Course
Ever wondered how music makes movies feel epic, scary, or totally emotional? That’s exactly what this course is about.
This six‑session course introduces students to the fundamentals of film music, starting with how music shapes emotion and narrative, then moving through core musical elements like tempo, harmony, texture, and dynamics. Students learn about motifs, themes, practice sketching short musical ideas, and explore accessible scoring tools. The course emphasises creativity and experimentation, with exercises such as scoring film music tropes or reimagining moods with limited sound palettes.
By the final sessions, students collaborate to score a one‑minute clip, applying their new skills to create different interpretations of the same scene. The focus is on understanding how musical choices—whether simple motifs or dynamic contrasts—transform the cinematic experience, leaving students with both practical skills and a deeper appreciation of film music’s storytelling power
