Piano Lessons – Isabella Gregory
About Isabella Gregory
Pursuing both her love for music and interest in the humanities, Isabella studies a conjoint degree in Religious Studies and Classical Performance Flute at Victoria University of Wellington/The New Zealand School of Music. During her first year, Isabella, under the tutelage of Bridget Douglas, was the recipient of both the Woodwind Player of the Year and New Zealand School of Music Director’s Awards, and the winner of the Woodwind Mock Audition Competition. This year, highlights have included performing in the finals of the National Concerto Competition, with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and playing in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra as a casual musician.
While the flute is now Isabella’ primary instrument of study, she also pursued the piano to a very high level and continues to enjoy playing. Isabella performed twice as a pianist in the national finals of the NZCT Chamber Music Contests, while also coaching a junior secondary school group to success at the local level of the same competition. As a piano soloist, Isabella performed in a lunchtime recital as part of the Christchurch Outstanding Young Musicians series.
In addition to her experiences as a chamber music tutor at secondary school level, Isabella has coached fellow university students in their preparation for keyboard skills assessments and lead rehearsals for the flute and woodwind sections of several orchestras. Isabella is also an academic mentor as part of the Pasifika Student Success Programme at Victoria University. Keen to optimise the efficacy of her own learning as well as that of her students, Isabella enjoys reading about evidence-based strategies for performance and practice that can be applied to any level. An NZQA Top Scholar in Music, Isabella brings a strong academic foundation to her teaching alongside a performance background, allowing her students to develop the technical understanding required to convey and develop their own musical ideas.
