About Pepe Becker

Pepe Becker

Pepe Becker began her musical life in Nelson: as a chorister in the Nelson Cathedral Choir, and as a pianist, singer and oboist in various local groups. Moving to Wellington in 1985, she developed a keen interest in Early Music and became a founder member of The Tudor Consort. She soon began performing professionally as a solo soprano in this field and has sung alongside internationally renowned Early Music singers such as Emma Kirkby, Richard Wistreich and Andreas Scholl.

Completing her BMus (in Composition) at Wellington’s Victoria University in 1987, Pepe travelled to Europe in 1991 to further her training in Baroque Singing. She studied for a year in London with Jessica Cash, then spent a year at The Hague’s Koninklijk Conservatorium, and performed professionally with a number of early music groups in the UK and The Netherlands. She also sang and played tin whistle in an Irish folk band!
Since her return to New Zealand in 1993, Pepe has set up her own vocal consort, Baroque Voices (founded in 1994); had three children, and become re-established as a versatile musician in her home country. Although from a primarily ‘Classical’ background, she is equally happy singing and teaching in jazz, folk and contemporary styles.

She has made several recordings for Radio NZ Concert, and features as a soloist on various CDs, including: David Farquhar’s “Half a Century of Song” (2003); a Baroque duet CD, “Rustic Revelry”, with bass David Morriss (2006); a NAXOS CD of Mendelssohn’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, with the NZSO (2010); a duo CD, “Love’s Nature”, with harpist Helen Webby (launched in Christchurch on 20 February 2011), and is featured as a composer and singer on Helen Webby’s CD of NZ harp music, “Pluck”, which was a “Best Classical Album” finalist in the 2013 NZ Music Awards.
In recent years she has sung (solo and in ensembles) on a number of movie soundtracks, including: “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” (NZ/US), “Mortal Engines” (US/UK/NZ) and “Daddy’s Little Girl”, “Charlie’s Farm” and “Boar” (Australia/US).

Pepe continues to perform regularly as a soloist with chamber groups, choirs and orchestras throughout New Zealand; directs, manages and sings in Baroque Voices; composes music; is a core member of Voices NZ Chamber Choir (since 1999) and the Voices 16; has lectured in Musicianship at the NZ School of Music; composes music; teaches piano, theory and singing, and also practises and teaches karate and astrology.
