Clay Animation | ages 8-12

Explore a wide variety of techniques and styles as you create your own clay animation.  

Students will watch and discuss clay animations, then work together in teams create their own. Students will finish off the class by creating an animation set to music.

Course Outline

Session 1 

  • View early clay animations
  • Beginnings of Clay Animation
  • Animate facial emotions using clay

Session 2

  • Morphing
  • Discuss difference between camera angles

Session 3

  • View work from Aardman Studios
  • Design quirky characters and props
  • Build characters

Session 4

  • View work from Laika
  • Use walk cycles to animate characters from previous session

Session 5 | Planning

  • View “Fleet Foxes – White Winter Hymnal”
  • Music clips assigned to each student or team
  • Storyboard for short music video
  • Build characters, props & sets for music video

Session 6

  • Animate Music Video

Session 7

  • Animate Music Video

Session 8

  • Finish Music Video
  • Parents are invited to our Animation Show at 5:15

Jess Weichler

Jess Weichler is a media arts educator at the MakerBox.

Ever since childhood she has been creating digital worlds through game design. Aside from a few lessons learnt from her 8-year old students, she is self-taught in the Scratch programming language, the Processing java subset, and a robotic Hummingbird micro-controller. She has taught these skills since 2012, and her courses are still in use both locally and abroad in the United States.
