APRIL 2024 Professional-level Screen Acting Intensive for Teens

Spend 3 days in the APRIL school holidays 2024 at the fantastic Rātā Studios on the Scots College campus in Miramar, Wellington.

For April 2024 we have made some changes to our previous intensive. This course will see you working solely with Miranda Harcourt and Perry Piercy for a full 3 days.

Miranda Harcourt DNZM


Renowned as a performance-pilot, not only does Miranda support stars at the highest level, she also guides emerging talents into stellar careers. Her global clients have won and been nominated for Oscars, Golden Globes, Emmys, BAFTAs and AAFTAs, most recently a 2022 Golden Globe win, a Best Actress nomination at the 2022 Academy Awards and a 2023 BAFTA win. She has lifted up countles
s careers over her long career as an actress, a director, a dramaturg and a coach.

Most recently she has been one of three Governors on the Talent Lab for directors and actors at TIFF 23. She lectures at schools including the UK’s National Film and TV School, The London Film School, Tisch, NYU, AFTRS, Rātā Studios and Toi Whakaari, New Zealand Drama School. 

Miranda shifts paradigms, empowering actors and directors to realize and activate their own talent. In her masterclasses on Zoom or in person, she introduces simple, quick, innovative, effective approaches to thinking about and achieving connection and character.       

She has developed a series of tools and exercises for use in-class, in the rehearsal-room and on-set that get actors to where they need to be, fast. Now, the startling impact of Miranda’s Tools (Connection, Space,  Internal Landscape, Vista, and Journey) is seen on sets and in rehearsals around the world. Her fortnightly Substack articles have thousands of global subscribers.

Miranda’s specialty is screen naturalism. Her approach is based on years of writing and performing Verbatim theatre in prisons in New Zealand, Australia and the UK. Miranda’s roll-call of clients includes Juliette Binoche, Saoirse Ronan, Paul Mescal, Ritu Arya, Dev Patel, Sunny Pawar, AnnaSophia Robb, Timothy Spall, Melanie Lynskey, Erik Thomson, Rebeca Gibney, Priyanka Bose, Josh Hutcherson, Thomasin McKenzie, Rhys Darby, Daisy Cooper, Carrie Underwood, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Hugo Weaving, Erana James, Claudia Karvan. Directors Miranda has worked with include Oscar winners and nominees Jane Campion, Peter Jackson and Garth Davis.

In 2023, Miranda was made a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her contributions to the screen industry and theatre.


Perry Piercy

Perry is Aotearoa's only qualified Fitzmaurice Voicework teacher. Through her voice work she combines world-leading training with deep industry experience. Her impressive background encompasses acting - with extensive experience on stage, screen and radio - teaching and directing. Her client list is a testament to her skill, including acclaimed actors John Lithgow, Elizabeth Banks, Marton Csokas, Ewen Leslie, Damon Herriman, Jermaine Clements, Erana James, Julian Dennison and many more. 

Perry’s coaching spans voice, dialects, presence, acting and presentation skills.  Her work is informed by her Masters in Voice from the prestigious Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, where she graduated with Distinction.  Her expertise is further enriched by Knight Thompson Speechwork, making her a go-to dialect coach for notable film and television projects like the Guardian five-star-reviewed Nude Tuesday, where she collaborated to create a ‘Nordic inspired’ invented language, and the BBC/Working Title TV series Luminaries for which she coached more than 35 different dialects from the UK, America, and Europe.

With her deep knowledge and warm, empathetic style, Perry works on stages and film sets across Aotearoa, supporting actors and directors through her dialect coaching skills and comprehensive script analysis. As a voice and dialect coach, Perry’s global experience is extensive, with teaching engagements in England, America, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. She has taught at Toi Whakaari, UCOL, WPAC, and Victoria University. 
Perry is passionate about empowering people to fully express themselves, dedicating her skills to pro-bono causes like Bedtime Stories at Arohata Prison and Tranzform for transgender youth.  Her unique blend of practical experience, technical skill, and embodied passion makes her a leader in the field of voice and dialect coaching.  She is also one of the key organisers of Freedom and Focus, a global voice conference to be held in 2025 in collaboration with Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School.

Content

Using games, techniques, new skills and insights, each teen will complete the long weekend workshop with a new world of inspiration, knowledge and craft. 
The three days will be based around Miranda’s Five Tools:  Connection, Space, Internal Landscape, Vista and Journey.

Perry will support the implementation of Miranda's five tools through foundational physical and vocal skills that are key to embodied voice and character work.

Outcome

At the conclusion of the course each student will be equipped with new skills, vision and opportunities to forge a future in the performing arts.

NB: Students need to make their own accommodation arrangements if coming from out of Wellington
